Bayonne is the story of a city that was both a trading port, open to the world and a fortified city, enclosed, constrained by its walls, a city born from the synthesis of these two tendencies, a priori totally opposed. It is naturally through water that we approach the city and its history, with Sophie Lefort, tour guide. Located at the confluence of the Adour and the Nive, close to the Ocean, Bayonne will become one of the most important ports in the Duchy of Aquitaine from the 12th century. Along the Nive, between the two main districts, the Grand and Petit Bayonne, Sophie makes us relive the excitement of this period. The opportunity to discover to what extent men had to constantly fight with the Adour River, with its wandering character. In the Middle Ages, the mouth was in fact 25 km further north, at the level of Cap Breton! It is in the company of Soizick Le Goff-Duchateau, Architect of the Buildings of France, that we discover the Sainte Marie Cathedral, in the heart of Greater Bayonne. This cathedral, which reflects the economic success of the port of Bayonne, was built from the 13th century on a strategic location: the highest point of the city. It is also here that the Romans had set up a large garrison camp. The Cathedral is currently the subject of three major restoration operations. Three million euros have been invested by the State for this long-term and large-scale project, which calls on rare craftsmen who have benefited from ancestral know-how. We climb into the scaffolding to witness a delicate operation: the laying of stones that were cut by Valérie Tatin Sauzé, stonemason. The opportunity to discuss with her her know-how, her "encounter" with the monument. We meet Sophie Lefort to explore the fortified city, from the fortifications of Mousseroles to the Vauban Citadel, to understand how these ramparts have constrained the city in its urban planning. To understand the characteristics of the Bayonne spirit, we set off to discover a "secret" of the ramparts: the casemates. Jean Louis Etchetto, from the Pottoroak casemate, opens the doors of an institution for us, one of these places once dedicated to war, now occupied by dozens of associations linked to sport, music, sports, and singing. He explains to us the wealth of these "clubs", how they operate, to what extent many things are at stake in these places...
