There is a wide range of prices for canned tomatoes. While chopped tomatoes from Pomito, Oro di Parma or Mutti, for example, are expensive, you can also buy cheap canned tomatoes at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe or Edeka. Here, the tomato content is 60% lower than in the expensive products - here you get 100 percent tomatoes. In addition, the branded products show the place of origin of the tomatoes, namely Italy. With the cheap products, you don't know where the tomatoes even come from. WHICH CANNED TOMATOES TASTE BEST? We do a taste test with amateur chefs. Oro di Parma is in the lead. The worst performer in our tasting was the "good and cheap" product from Edeka. The testers found the tomatoes to be too watery and too sour. HOW HEALTHY ARE CANNED TOMATOES? Tomatoes contain lycopene, which is heat-resistant and is even better absorbed when it is chopped, pureed and concentrated. Experts also say that it prevents cancer. HARMFUL SUBSTANCES AND PESTICIDES? Our test in the laboratory found almost no pesticides, so that the products could even receive an organic seal in this regard. Only one product had pesticide residues, but in very small, harmless quantities. However, we found bisphenol A in all canned tomatoes in small to high quantities - although still below the limit values. This substance can pass from the inner coating of the cans to the food. The highest contamination value was found in Rewe's own brand ja! Oro di Parma and Lidl's own brand Freshona were almost uncontaminated.
