The EU has a goal of becoming climate neutral by 2050 and Sweden wants to become so as early as 2045. To reach those goals, they want to make the steel industry climate neutral by producing fossil-free steel, as the steel industry accounts for 7–8 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions in the world. Therefore, large investments are made in Norrland to produce so-called green steel where companies such as LKAB, SSAB, Vattenfall and H2 Green steel are involved. But the investments are very expensive and require enormous amounts of electricity, electricity that we do not have today. Some believe that the projects have poor economic viability and could have disastrous consequences for the Swedish economy and the electricity market. Some who have looked at the social and corporate consequences that the projects can have are Magnus Henrekson, professor of economics, and David Sundén, doctor of economics. Welcome to this week's Hotspot, where we talk about Sweden's biggest industrial policy investment of all time. Hotspot is a conversation program about Christian faith, culture and society.
