Green hydrogen burns cleanly: The environmentally friendly gas is supposed to save the world from global warming. Does it really protect the climate or is it a mistake that will cost billions? Green hydrogen is considered a miracle cure in the fight against climate change. But the technology is still in its infancy. In addition, much more green electricity is needed than is currently available to produce the green gas. Hydrogen is still produced almost exclusively from natural gas, emitting the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Green hydrogen, on the other hand, is clean. It is produced with green electricity from water. This principle has been known for a long time. At the German Aerospace Center in Jülich, under the world's largest artificial sun, scientists are working on producing hydrogen without electricity, using only light. If the project is successful, the valuable gas could soon be mass-produced in countries where there is plenty of sunshine. Hydrogen is already used as an energy source in buses, trains, cars and soon also in airplanes. The gas also powers rockets - and even German submarines. Now aircraft manufacturers, steel producers and truck makers are preparing to make multi-million-dollar investments. They speculate on a hydrogen boom and a climate-neutral future. But critics warn that billions could be wasted on misguided initiatives. #dwdocumentary #freedocumentary #climate ـــــ DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
