Ralph Caspers and all other dog owners know that dogs associate certain words with certain actions or objects. But can dogs really understand words? When they hear words like "sit," "down," or "paw," dogs usually know exactly what to do. Dogs have been trained to recognize and generally understand these words. They are rewarded with treats for correct behavior. But do dogs understand language or do they just have a kind of "sound understanding"? Are dogs able to learn words? Social media is full of videos of dogs that seem to understand certain words and respond to them. Some use a kind of sound board to communicate with their owners. Other dogs can remember the names of a surprising number of objects. The interesting thing is that these dogs understand whether it is a name for an object or a command to fetch it. This proves that they understand the context. In this video, Ralph tells you what other crazy stories there are about dogs, whether dogs can show emotions, and what research knows so far about dog behavior.
