So you can't build chest no matter how often or how much you bench press? In this video I'm going to show you the biomechanical and scientific reason for this and more importantly, give you a chest exercise that will make your chest grow better. The key to a bigger chest is to make sure you're activating your pecs and not your shoulders and triceps during the press. Some of the limitations of the bench press are known to be inhibitors of the very activation you're looking for. These are made worse by the fact that some people are simply genetically predisposed to thrive on the bench press. Let's start by discussing the biomechanical limitations of this popular chest exercise. First, range of motion. We know that horizontal adduction across the arm (at the shoulders) is one of the primary functions of the pectoralis major and chest muscles. During the bench press, your arm only goes through a total of 80 to 90 degrees of adduction. This starts at negative 15 degrees at the bottom of the bench press and goes up to around 70 degrees at the top of the rep. When people struggle to build chest, it is simply because they do not have enough activation of the pecs to stimulate growth. This is made worse by the fact that they often substitute contraction in the pecs for activation of the deltoids and triceps to move the bar. The second thing to notice is that the strength curve in the bench press is downward sloping, meaning that as the bar moves away from the chest, the exercise becomes easier and the tension on the pecs is lost. In their most adducted position, the corresponding tension on the pecs is at its lowest. This does not bode well for the exercise and its ability to add more volume to the chest. Biologically speaking, certain individuals have lower proportions of fast twitch fibers in the chest, which only lessens the response of the exercise as a heavy-weighted exercise like the bench press. Don't get me wrong, the bench press is a formidable chest exercise in terms of its ability to progressively overload and create chest growth by simply applying more tension to the chest than other chest exercises. It's just not enough. Arm length can also be a negative when it comes to seeing chest gains during the bench press. Those with longer arms will have a harder time creating the leverage needed to lift heavy weights in the exercise and therefore tend to have a harder time allowing the chest to integrate the deltoids and triceps to assist them during the lift. The answer to your problems is to incorporate the cable press, also with adduction. This powerful chest mass booster is one of the most underrated and effective exercises for building a bigger chest. The key to success is that this chest movement actually addresses all of the primary weaknesses of the traditional bench press. Not only can you get a lot more adduction in the movement, but the tension on the chest at its maximum adduction is much better, causing more overstimulation during the exercise. Additionally, the strength curve complements that of the barbell bench press and allows for much better stimulation of the chest throughout a greater part of the range of motion. Using this in conjunction with the bench press performed very heavily will be one of the best combos you can use when trying to build a bigger chest. Make sure you follow the tips on setting up this exercise correctly and how to perform it with proper form so you don't give up any of the potential gains. I also include instructions for setting up in the video.
