Campo Belo is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais. Geography It is located at an altitude of 945 meters and has an area of 526.75 km². According to the IBGE estimate, its population in July 2015 was 54,076 inhabitants.[6] (population density: 102.66 inhabitants/km²). It is located at the junction between two federal highways (BR-354 and BR-369), being 30 km from Rodovia Fernão Dias. It is crossed by a railroad, the Tronco Line of the former Rede Mineira de Viação, currently granted to Ferrovia Centro Atlântica for cargo transportation.[10] Campo Belo has an average temperature of 20.5 °C and an average annual rainfall index of 1406 mm. Throughout the year the average rainfall value varies between 14 mm in August and 271 mm in December. The temperature, in turn, varies from 9.9 °C in June to 28.8 °C in January. The municipality has an airport with a 1420 m long asphalt runway, located 6 km from the city center. In the administrative division of 1911, the municipality had five districts: Campo Belo, Cristalis, Nossa Senhora das Candeias, Porto de Mendes and Santana do Jacaré. Since the publication of State Law 2.764, on December 30, 1962, the municipality has been made up of two districts: Campo Belo and Porto dos Mendes.[14] Economy The economy is varied, Campo Belo has stood out in recent years as a hub for textile industries, with several companies in this sector. In agriculture, coffee, corn, beans and rice stand out, in livestock farming practically all products derived from cattle have great expression, such as milk (dairy products), meat (slaughterhouses) and leather (tanneries). Basic industry and mining are other prominent segments, the latter due to the presence of granite, clay and limestone. The ceramics industry also has an important presence in the economy. Education and culture Education includes not only the municipal and state networks, but also private schools and two higher education institutions: Unifenas: José do Rosário Vellano University and CEMES - Centro Mineiro do Ensino Superior, with courses covering several areas of knowledge. The city has an educated population, which facilitates the establishment of new companies and the qualified workforce. It has a Casa da Cultura de Campo Belo Foundation, in Praça Rui Barbosa, where several courses in the area of culture are offered. The Regional Education Superintendence of Campo Belo, located at the entrance to the municipality, covers twelve municipalities under its jurisdiction. Opened in 2013, Praça Vereador Antônio Rodrigues de Melo (Museum Square) offers the population ample space for leisure, in addition to a city museum.
