The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a heavy military transport aircraft created by the American company Lockheed for the US Air Force in the late 1960s. Created as part of the CX-HLS program, the C-5 aircraft was a real breakthrough in the aviation of its time, giving rise to many new technologies that were later widespread throughout the aviation industry. With its enormous size and record-breaking payload, the Galaxy practically closed the issue of the shortage of transport capacities in the US Air Force. However, the huge number of innovations entailed a huge number of problems, the solution of which took a lot of time, effort and money. A total of 131 aircraft were built in the C-5A and C-5B versions. Most of the fleet is in storage, about 50 aircraft, in the modernized version C-5M Super Galaxy, are active in the US Air Force.
