The Al Thani family, the emir, holds the reins firmly in their hands. The ZDFinfo documentary looks behind the scenes of the small country with great influence. In the early 1970s, the world's largest gas field was discovered off the coast of Qatar, thus securing the emirate's future. But in order to export the gas, the country needed a lot of workers - migrant workers from abroad, who are still the controversial driving force behind its success today. The more oil and gas are needed in the world, the richer Qatar becomes, now the world's largest exporter of natural gas. The World Cup is now intended to increase the country's prestige, but for a long time headlines have been dominated by inhumane working conditions on stadium construction sites. Officials from Amnesty International and the International Labour Organization (ILO) report on the prevailing so-called Kafala system, which turns workers into serfs. The documentary shows the story of a family dynasty that puts up with a lot in order to survive as a global player among the world powers.
