On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) submitted a motion for a vote of confidence in accordance with Article 68 of the Basic Law. Article 68 stipulates that at least 48 hours must elapse between the motion and the vote on it. The Bundestag will convene in a special session on Monday, December 16, 2024, to discuss the motion. In the subsequent roll-call vote, the majority of the members of the Bundestag would have to express their confidence in Scholz, which is not expected after the breakup of the traffic light coalition. Federal President Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier can then dissolve the Bundestag within 21 days at the suggestion of the Federal Chancellor. The date for the new election of the Bundestag has so far been given as February 23, 2025.
