EPILEPSY WARNING: From 6:25 - 6:45 we show a fast flickering animation - Do our brains slow down time in extreme situations by making us think faster? Ralph Caspers explains what's happening. There are extreme situations that no one should get into, such as car accidents. There are also situations that are less serious, in which the time to react is very short, such as a cup falling off the dining table. These situations have one thing in common: It seems as if time is slowing down and that is why we often find enough time to react. But is it possible that our brain can slow down time in extreme situations and that we can think much faster in time than in normal situations? Or is that a fallacy? Of course, such events do not unfold like in The Matrix, where the so-called "bullet time" technique is used, which slows down time. But survivors of extreme situations actually report feeling very calm and that it felt as if they had had a lot of time to think about the situation. Does the brain have an emergency mode in which we can react faster and thus slow down time? What does science know about this?
