We explore the lessons that can be learned today from the defeat of Niwa Nagahide, who was one of the four great generals of the Oda clan and supported Oda Nobunaga's project to unify the country. Born in Owari Province in 1535, Nagahide is said to have served Nobunaga, who was one year older than him, at the age of 16, and gained such trust that Nobunaga called him "a friend and a brother." Nagahide became the first vassal of the Oda clan to hold a domain, destroying the Asakura clan in Echizen and receiving the entire province of Wakasa. He was also recognized for his castle-building skills and directed the construction of Azuchi Castle. Nagahide became a senior vassal of the Oda clan alongside Shibata Katsuie, but his position became precarious after the Honnoji Incident. After the Kiyosu Conference, the lower-ranking Hashiba Hideyoshi, who had succeeded in avenging his lord, took control of the Oda clan, and he faced Nobunaga's second son, Oda Nobuo, who succeeded as head of the Oda clan, in the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute. At this time, Nagahide followed Hideyoshi and was forced to confront the Oda clan, who had been his loyal subjects for many years. Why did Nagahide end up serving under Hideyoshi? After Nagahide's death, his eldest son, Nagashige, inherited his fief of 1.23 million koku, but Hideyoshi reduced it to just 40,000 koku. Nagashige also sided with the Western Army in the Battle of Sekigahara and was stripped of his title, but the castle-building techniques he inherited from his father, Nagahide, were highly praised and he was revived as the feudal lord of the Shirakawa domain with 100,000 koku. In the generation of Nagahide's grandson, Mitsushige, he was transferred to the Nihonmatsu domain, and from then on, the Niwa family reigned as lords of Nihonmatsu domain until the end of the Edo period. If Nagahide had lived longer, what path would he have taken?
