This article explores the lessons that can be applied to the present day from the defeat of Kira Kozuke no Suke, who lost his life in the attack by the Ako Roshi. Born in Edo in 1641 as the eldest son of Kira Yoshifuyu, a noble hatamoto who was in charge of ceremonies and rites for the shogunate, Kozuke no Suke married the younger sister of Uesugi Tsunakatsu, the lord of the Yonezawa domain, at the age of 18, and became the head of the noble family at the age of 43. Kozuke no Suke owned a total of 4,200 koku of land in Mikawa and Kozuke provinces, and in Kira, Mikawa, he was involved in flood control projects and new rice field development, and is said to have been a wise ruler loved by his subjects. However, at the age of 61, he was suddenly attacked by Asano Takumi no Kami, the lord of the Ako domain, who was in charge of entertaining imperial envoys, in the Pine Corridor of Edo Castle, and was injured. Takumi no Kami committed seppuku on the same day, but Kozuke no Suke was not punished, which earned him the resentment of Takumi no Kami's retainers. Then, one year and nine months after the incident, the Ako Roshi led by Oishi Kuranosuke carried out an attack on the Kira residence, and Kozuke no Suke was beheaded. Why was Kozuke no Suke unable to protect his own life? Approximately 50 days after the attack on the Kira residence, 46 Ako Roshi committed seppuku and journeyed to be with their deceased lord. On that day, the Kira family was also given the harsh punishment of being stripped of their title. It is said that the background to the shogunate's condemnation of the Kira family was the voice of the public that could not be ignored. Kira family head Yoshichika, who was exiled to Shinano, passed away three years later at the young age of 21, and the Kira family's status as a noble family came to an end. Kozuke brought about the tragedy of the extinction of the family name. However, an even greater defeat awaited him after this!
