In 1964, most people believed that the reason people become poor was a matter of biology and had little to do with the environment they grew up in. Urie Bronfenbrenner, a young psychologist, helped us understand that a child's environment also matters. When he was invented to explain his ecosystem theory to the U.S. Congress, he made history. CLASSROOM EXERCISE Give each child a sheet of paper with Bronfenbrenner's 5 systems and have them draw the people and forces that influence their lives in each of the circles. Then have them explain to a classmate the connections between the different forces and their effects on their lives. Later you can ask your students what they know about poverty? Do they exist in your country and if so, how would the systems of a poor child differ from theirs? You might even want to have your students simulate a congress and create an action plan to fight poverty in your country. Who knows, maybe one day it will come true ;).
