About :

Bródno Stare. The oldest stronghold in Warsaw – is a short animation about the tribal community inhabiting the area of today's metropolis at a time when there was no city here yet, and the Piast dynasty was just creating the foundations of the Polish state. In the Bródnowski Forest, in the Targówek district of Warsaw, relics of an early medieval monument are still visible today. The oldest stronghold and the oldest known medieval settlement in the area of today's city existed here. The establishment of this center is associated with the beginning of uninterrupted settlement continuity in the area of modern Warsaw. The settlement on the small Brodnia River, from which the Bródnowska Forest took its name, was established in the late 9th or early 10th century and functioned until the 11th century. The stronghold, which was built here in the second half of the 10th or early 11th century, was of a refuge nature - it had no permanent buildings and was not inhabited, but served the residents as a shelter in case of danger. The stronghold burned down in the first half of the 11th century, but the settlement operated longer, perhaps until the end of the 11th century. Although the basis of the local economy was agriculture, numerous crafts were present in the settlement. Iron was smelted from local ore, non-ferrous metals were cast, objects were made from wood, bones and antlers, ceramics were produced and materials were woven. Excavations provided a lot of information, including about diet and methods of storing food. The residents of the center also maintained active trade contacts with distant communities, including Ruthenia. For the needs of the project, a full 3D reconstruction of the settlement and stronghold at the Bródno Stare site at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries was made. The film shots in the virtual space were made in the Unreal Engine 4 game engine. Realization: Mateusz Osiadacz Read by: Filip Kosior Sound: Studio Osorno Krzysztof Czeczot, Jan Jędrzejczyk, Maciej Zych, Patryk Makowski The project was financed from the budget of the Capital City of Warsaw. ENGLISH VERSION ------------------------------------------- “Bródno Stare. “The oldest stronghold in Warsaw” is a short animated film about a tribal community living in the area of the modern capital long before the city came into being, in the times when the Piast dynasty was just beginning to build the Polish state. In the Bródno Forest, in the modern district of Targówek, you can still see the remains of the early mediaeval site. It is here that the oldest stronghold of Warsaw and the oldest known mediaeval settlement within the city's limits were found. The settlement's foundation marks the beginning of an uninterrupted inhabitancy of the area, lasting until today. The settlement over the small Brodnia River (which lent its name to the Bródno Forest) was founded either at the end of the 9th century or at the beginning of the 10th, and functioned until the 11th century. The stronghold built in the second half of the 10th century or at the beginning of the 11th was of the refugial type – it had no permanent buildings inside. The residents used it to hide when their settlement was in danger. The stronghold itself was burnt down in the first half of the 11th century, but the settlement lasted longer, perhaps even until the end of that century. Although agriculture was the basis of the local economy, the settlement has traces of numerous crafts. Iron for tools was melted from the local bog iron, other metals were also obtained. Various objects were made of wood, bone, and antler; ceramics and fabrics were also produced. Archaeological excavations provided insights about the locals' diet and food preservation methods. The inhabitants traded with distant communities, including the Rus. A full 3D reconstruction of the 10th / 11th century settlement and stronghold was made. All the footages of the reconstructed site were made in Unreal Engine 4. Realization: Mateusz Osiadacz Narrator: Filip Kosior Sound Design: Studio Osorno Krzysztof Czeczot, Jan Jędrzejczyk, Maciej Zych, Patryk Makowski The project was founded by the City of Warsaw.
