According to Greek Mythology, Mount Athos is associated with the battle of giants, between the Giants and the Gods of Olympus. The leader of the first was Athos. Athos, threw from Thrace, a huge rock against Poseidon, missed, and the rock fell into the sea, creating the Mount, which was given its name. The Holy Mount, today, consists of 20 holy monasteries and other monastic institutions , such as hermitages, cells, hermitages. Its capital is Karyes.
