It is one of the largest evacuations in Switzerland. 110 residents have to leave the Graubünden mountain village of Brienz because of the risk of rockslides. The village was supposed to be saved from this with a massive drainage tunnel. How did it come to this? How are people experiencing these days? "Einstein" on the drama surrounding the impending landslide in Brienz GR. ???? Today it is their nightmare. Above the mountain village, 2 million cubic meters of rock - the so-called island - are threatening to collapse. And nobody foresaw this. Four years ago, the village landslide was considered the greatest danger to the mountain village. The mountain above the village also slipped. It was considered possible that a landslide could occur from there, but not as an immediate danger. Half a year ago, geologists were even rejoicing because a drainage tunnel had significantly calmed the slide of the village and the mountain. A disaster without warning But in mid-April, the bad news came. A section of the mountainside, the island, is sliding ever faster. Until now, it was hardly considered a source of danger. Now it was sliding ever faster. The forecasts range from harmless small rockfalls to a devastating landslide. "Einstein" shows how geologists explain the sudden danger and how they develop the crash scenarios. How climate change leads to natural disasters Opinions differ as to whether the Brienz slide is a result of climate change. But it is undisputed that climate change in the Alps is fundamentally responsible for an increase in rockfalls. But the foothills of the Alps are also at risk. In particular due to increased heavy rainfall. For the first time, researchers have been able to calculate how much greater the risk of landslides in the foothills of the Alps is as a result. And these do not just affect individual mountain slopes, but can collectively become a deadly threat to the inhabitants of the valley. A village after the disaster Nobody knows whether Brienz will survive the rockslide unscathed. But if a disaster does occur, the village will have a difficult future ahead of it. This is shown by the Valais mountain village of Gondo, where a mudslide devastated the village in 2000 and killed 13 people. Today, Gondo has only half as many residents as before the disaster. The suffering of the Bonifazis And what traces has the evacuation, the fear for their homeland, left on the Brienz farming family Bonifazi? She gives "Einstein" touching insights into her emotional world and her everyday life, which has been completely turned upside down by the evacuation. ________________________ ◾ Director: Andrea Fischli-Roth ◾ Editor: Simon Joller ◾ Moderation: Tobias Müller © 2023 SRF ________________________ This is Einstein: We tell stories that inform, educate and entertain.
