Let's remember this historic moment for Botafogo in the 1993 Copa Conmebol, a very memorable title for a difficult time for the club. After losing the 1992 Brazilian title to rival Flamengo, its president, Emil Pinheiro, sold everyone and took several players to América-RJ in 1993 to compete in the Carioca! This title for Botafogo is certainly very underrated. It was the second year of the Conmebol tournament, and it was a short tournament, starting in the round of 16! In 1993, Botafogo had a terrible Brazilian championship, finishing last in its group and going 13 hours without scoring a goal! It was a young team, with many unknown players, and its main reference was the striker Sinval, ex-Portuguesa, who was very decisive in this conquest and top scorer in the 1993 Copa Conmebol with 8 goals! And we can't forget to mention the legend Carlos Alberto Torres, who was Botafogo's coach! The title is very reminiscent of Botafogo's trajectory in the 2024 Libertadores, in which they faced Bragantino, Atlético-MG and Penarol in the final, tough games, at a time when television didn't give much importance to the competition. Botafogo was the first team from Rio to win a South American tournament at the Maracana Stadium for their fans. In the final at the Maracana, with the upper ring of the Maracana packed, they saw a tense game, with lots of fighting on the field between Botafogo and Penarol. The Uruguayan team took the lead 1-0 and then in the second half the team turned the game around with goals from free kicks by Eliel and striker Sinval, always decisive in important moments. But at the end of the game Botafogo conceded the equalizer and the match ended up going to penalties.
