Need to make a fixture for boring deep holes. A day's work. When faced with the task of boring a deep hole, you immediately understand that standard tools will not suffice. My longest boring cutter of 70 mm was not enough - at such a length, the rigidity drops sharply. My goal was to create a device 150 mm long, which would be rigid and precise. On my small lathe, installing such a device in the tool holder would only make the situation worse, so I decided to go another way - to make my own solution. This turned out to be a real engineering challenge! I started the work by selecting materials. For the base, I chose a steel rod with a diameter of 25 mm made of 45 steel and a massive block 40 mm thick. Without a band saw, I took up an abrasive cutter, deciding at the same time to check how much it would wear the disc. The task was not an easy one: the massive block heated up to 100 degrees, and I had to spend time removing burrs and rust. After preparing the blanks, an important stage came - precise processing. Working with a block gave me an excellent chance to accustom myself to high precision. Instead of the usual square, I used a dial indicator to perfectly align each plane, making them parallel or perpendicular to each other. It was delicate and painstaking work, but the result was worth it. The resulting part was as geometrically correct as possible. To give it a more elegant look, I processed the corners at 45 degrees, and then proceeded to drilling holes. To attach the screw, I accurately calculated and marked the center, and then used an extended drill. It would seem that everything is simple, but the technique of drilling deep holes requires special care. Especially when the drill breaks inside the blank! This moment was a real challenge, but with the help of a carbide drill I managed to extract the fragment. After that, I drilled a hole with a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 70 mm. This was my first experience working with such dimensions, and I was nervous like a first-year student at an exam. When it came time to make the clamp for the cutters, I thought through every detail. Instead of regular screws, which can damage the soft steel of the workpiece over time, I chose to fasten them using high-strength screws with a strength class of 12.9. I prepared holes for them using a whole set of tools: from a center drill to a tap. Everything turned out perfectly! However, the handle of one of the screws turned in an inconvenient direction. The solution was simple - remove 1 mm from the height of the part. The final touch was grinding and processing with abrasives to remove the roughness and give the device a finished look. When I put it all together, I could not believe that I did it myself! During testing, my device surprised: the cutter went smoothly even with a rod extension of 100 mm. I was convinced that the device turned out to be universal: it is suitable for both deep boring and small parts. Now I have an even more difficult task - boring a hole with a diameter of 16 mm to a depth of 120 mm. This will be a serious test for my device, but I will tell you about it in the next video.
