Our catechesis today coincides with the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, instituted by Saint Pius V after the victory of the Christian fleet against the Turks in the battle of Lepanto (1571). The Rosary since its origin has been distinguished by its twofold dimension: noetic, that is, nourishment of faith, and dynamic, in its being contemplation for action. The Rosary shows us the centrality of the mystery of Mary Most Holy Mediatrix, who in turn shows us Jesus, and as taking us by the hand, she accompanies us in the contemplation of his mysteries. The experiential aspect, so dear to modernism, to the point of being privileged above and before faith, is an important element of our prayer, as an effect not as a cause. The Rosary puts order and restores to us the freshness of Christian life against all attempts to subvert it, of yesterday and today.
