Blagoveshchensk is the final railway station on the line departing from Belogorsk station on the Trans-Siberian Railway. On May 21 (June 2), 1856, a military detachment of about 500 soldiers arrived on the left bank of the Amur, not far from the mouth of the Zeya, and began clearing the territory to prepare it for future settlers. The soldiers cleared the forest, prepared logs for buildings, and cleared space for vegetable gardens.
