🐦 In this video: Video, picture, song and calls of the black woodpecker Name: Black woodpecker Family: Woodpeckers Characteristic features/appearance: Slender bird, completely black plumage, long, angular head with white eyes and light beak. Size: 40-46 cm Weight: 260-340 g Age: 14 years Females: Both sexes have completely black plumage. The only distinguishing feature is the red markings on the crown, which in the male begins above the base of the beak and – tapering – extends almost to the neck, while in the female it only covers the back of the head up to the base of the neck. Song/calls: When flying you can hear a far-reaching "krück krück krück". When sitting often a loud call "Kiiie-äh". The loud song consists of whistling tones that are reminiscent of the laughter of the green woodpecker, but start slowly and hesitantly and hardly drops in pitch. Towards the end of the song, however, the sounds become loud and hectic. Drums in loud, audible swirls. Breeding season: April - June, 1 annual brood, 12-14 day breeding period Nest: Specially built cave with an oval entrance, slightly tapering at the top, usually in beech trees. Clutch size: 3-5 eggs Food: Ants and wood-dwelling insects, beetles and their larvae. Habitat: Beech and mixed forest with old trees, also in old pine and spruce forests.
