In this video: Image and song of the black redstart Name: black redstart Family: flycatchers Characteristic features/appearance: Very similar to the common redstart, with a rusty-red tail that is constantly moving. The coloring of the black redstart, however, is darker, grey-black with a distinct white wing field. Size: 13-14 cm Weight: 12-20g Age: 5 years Female: Mostly brown-grey, noticeably darker than female redstarts. Also constantly trembling with its rusty-red tail. The male looks similar to the female in its first and second year of life and only then develops the grey-black coloring and white wing patch. Song/calls: Beginning with several whistling tones and a clattering, squashed, rough series of notes, followed by a whistling final song. After its relative, the common redstart, it rings in the morning bird song concert about 70 minutes before sunrise. The call to attract and warn is a sharp whistling "fist"; when very excited, it calls "fist, teck, teck, teck". Breeding period: April - July, 2 broods per year, 12-16 days of incubation. Nest: In rock crevices, wall niches, roof beams or in semi-cavity nest boxes. Clutch size: 5-6 eggs. Food: Insects, spiders, larvae and worms. Habitat: In mountainous areas, on slopes, with boulders and bushes, quarries, open and semi-open landscapes, settlements and cities, factories and port facilities. Natural enemies: martens, magpies, crows and jays.
