José Ortega y Gasset (Madrid, May 9, 1883 - ibid., October 18, 1955) was a Spanish philosopher and essayist, a leading exponent of the theory of perspectivism and of vital and historical reason, situated in the movement of noucentisme. For Ortega, the objective of philosophy is to find the fundamental being of the world. This "fundamental being" is radically different from any contingent or intramundane being; and it is also different from "the given" (expression with which Ortega referred to the contents of our conscience = "the given" in our conscience). All content of conscience is, by definition, fragmentary, and does not serve to offer the meaning of the world and of existence. This meaning is only found in the "fundamental being" or "the whole." Philosophy is the knowledge that is responsible for bringing us closer to this question. Do you want to know more about the most important thinker of Spain in the 20th century?
