“Black Holes: From Albert Einstein to Gravitational Waves and Beyond” Lecture Date: 06/18/2019 Lecturer: Prof. Dr. João Steiner Institution: IAG/USP Lecture number: 133 This lecture will present the concept, origin, and evolution of the idea of a black hole. The various steps that led science to confirm the existence of these objects will be discussed. The guest speaker will show why they are important for the formation of structures in the universe. In 2016, the direct detection of gravitational waves caused by the collision of two black holes was announced: in 2019, the first image of the shadow of a supergiant black hole was shown. In both cases, the idea of a black hole was confirmed at the limit of the strong gravitational field. There is also speculation about the next scientific advances related to the study of these objects.
