Two farmers, two farms and one great passion: large and rare cattle - at least in the north. On the pastures of Tino Bullmann and Stephan Ruhnow-Thieße there are animals that are kept outside all year round. Some of the species were on the verge of extinction: bison, water buffalo and Heck cattle. Now in winter there are exciting tasks ahead. The pastures on the organic cattle breeders' land are deep and muddy after flooding and frost. The animals don't really mind, but they can't find enough grass to graze on. Tino Bullmann from Eilte in Heidekreis has to get his water buffalo through the winter with additional feed. At the same time, many of his animals will soon have offspring. They have to move to another pasture. But the herd is unfamiliar with the rotation. The entire farm team pitches in. At first everything goes smoothly until farmer Tino opens the gate. At Stephan Ruhnow-Thieße's in Neustadt am Rübenberge, the vet comes to the pastures for his annual check-up. Blood has to be taken from 60 Heck cattle. But first the beefy animals have to be rounded up. This is not without danger, because their long horns are sharp and the animals do not often come into contact with people. On Tino Bullmann's Eilte organic farm, it is time for foot care. None of the giants, weighing up to 550 kg, show their hooves voluntarily. The water buffalo have to go into the hooving stand for this purpose. It is small and narrow. It is also a challenge for the new trainee. She does not yet know the processes and is now to look after the animals together with the boss for the first time. Both farmers believe that the large and rare cattle are treated humanely. For Stephan Ruhnow-Thieße, this also includes slaughtering: the animals die without stress in their familiar surroundings. They are killed directly on the pasture with a targeted gunshot. ______________________________________ The farm stories on ndr.de https://www.ndr.de/fernsehen/sendunge...
