Markus Harrer from Laibstadt in Middle Franconia wants to have his garden certified as bird-friendly as part of a Bavaria-wide campaign. But what criteria does a garden have to meet to do this? Bavaria-wide campaign The bird-friendly garden project is a campaign by the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation in cooperation with the Bavarian Species Conservation Center. Gardens that are rich in structure and close to nature are awarded. The requirements Anyone in Bavaria can take part. Regardless of the size of the garden, but provided that it meets at least two of the four mandatory criteria for bird-friendly gardens. These are: wild corners, fruit and seeds as food, nesting material and insect diversity in the garden. The Harrer family's garden meets all four. In addition to the mandatory criteria, there are also exclusion criteria. The use of pesticides, robotic lawnmowers and leaf blowers or vacuums, unnecessary surface sealing, planting areas with weed fleece and gravel and the extensive spreading of bark mulch and wood chips are prohibited in bird-friendly gardens. None of these criteria apply to the Harrer family's garden. Their almost 1000 m² family garden is designed in a natural way, rich in structure and offers enough places to retreat and nest and food for all kinds of animals. There are piles of dead wood and hedges, various dry stone walls, stone towers, nesting aids, an open compost heap and even a naturally formed pond. So the chances are good. Certification Since the team of volunteers is quite small, it can take a while after successful registration until certification. The Harrer family has waited 2 years. But today their garden is finally going to be tested. It will be assessed based on 6 subject areas. A certain number of feathers can be obtained for each subject area. If the total number of feathers exceeds the minimum limit at the end, nothing stands in the way of certification. The Harrer family's garden has achieved almost full marks and can now call itself bird-friendly. Visit us here: Querbeet on the Internet: https://www.br.de/br-fernsehen/sendun...
