The Belo Horizonte Bus Terminal (officially Governor Israel Pinheiro Bus Terminal), opened in 1971 as the largest and most modern bus terminal in Latin America, before the Tietê Terminal was opened in São Paulo. It is located in Praça Rio Branco, in the city center. Access can be made via the Lagoinha Metro Station. In the 1940s, newspapers announced that BH would be the first capital in the country to have a bus station with the centralization of all bus services. The first Bus Station in Brazil was opened in June 1941, behind the Feira de Amostras, facing Avenida do Contorno, during the Benedito Valadares administration. Its construction was carried out by the Department of Agriculture, with Israel Pinheiro as secretary, the future governor of the state who would build the current bus station. The Bus Station was a two-story building with a covered lane with space for ten buses. After this construction, other changes were made to the bus service, such as the numbering of seats and stricter adherence to schedules, inspection of buses and tickets sold. By the mid-1950s, the old station no longer had the minimum conditions to handle the high volume of passengers. There were 500 buses and 160 shorter routes, making it necessary to improvise a platform in an area provided by the Central, on Aarão Reis Street. Therefore, it could not accommodate the high volume of buses and passengers. To alleviate the problem until the construction of the new bus station in 1965, the DER built a temporary passenger boarding station on Curitiba Street, between Oiapoque and Contorno Avenues.
