Justino’s story, told by Maria, a law student, reflects a profound injustice and the difficulties faced by vulnerable people in the justice system. Justino, a young farmer from Echarate, lived with his mother. Naively, Justino allowed his neighbours to use his house to store motorcycles, which indirectly implicated him in a case of aggravated theft. The lack of adequate legal support marked his process. A negligent lawyer and an indifferent judicial system left him helpless. He was placed in pretrial detention, where he suffered physical and psychological abuse, and contracted HIV (AIDS) due to the prison conditions. Despite the efforts of his mother and those close to him to help him, Justino died shortly after his release from health complications, leaving his mother devastated. This experience motivated Maria to study law, with the aim of ensuring an adequate defence and fighting the injustice that so many people, like Justino, face in silence.
