The City of God has never been biblical except in name. The history of this favela in Rio de Janeiro has been marked by violence, poverty and drug trafficking. In 2002, a film of the same name made it the most famous favela in the world. But for the past four years, the City of God has been undergoing a small revolution. While Rio will host part of the 2014 Football World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, local authorities are experimenting with a new security policy by installing "Pacification Police Units" tasked with restoring the rule of law and security. However, many problems persist, starting with poverty, but the guns have fallen silent and the 47,000 or so inhabitants of the City of God can now reveal another face: that of a community that works, sings and laughs. This documentary meets those who live in the City of God today and offers a portrait of this favela far from clichés and preconceived ideas. But behind the tragedies and the great violence, the favela has seen a new face in recent years, more peaceful thanks to a new social policy, less focused on repression and more on support and education. Football is a way to catalyze the anger of young people and divert them from organized crime and the easy money of drug trafficking. But as long as poverty is the daily lot of the inhabitants of the famous favela, trafficking and violence will continue to reign. This documentary shows a new face and hopes for this favela that seeks to give a better future to its young people.
