In this episode, we welcome Fotis Photiadis, founder and CEO of Better Origin, a company that transforms local supermarket food waste into sustainable animal feed using artificial intelligence tools. Fotis founded Better Origin as part of a business competition at the University of Cambridge in 2015. The inspiration for their model comes from nature and how technology mimics the way insects convert waste nutrients back into essential nutrients in the food chain. Specifically, the company has created decentralized mini-farms of insects, where through artificial intelligence they manage to be fed to other farm animals. Today, Better Origin has raised a total of $22.2 million, from top investors and has managed to collaborate with Morrisons, one of the largest supermarket chains in the United Kingdom. Fotis shares with us his journey with Better Origin - from his desire to create a positive impact in the world, to choosing his master's degree in Engineering for Sustainable Development, and founding Better Origin. Starting out as 4 co-founders, he explains the team's journey and how it ended up being down to 2, the role he believes universities play in the development of entrepreneurship, his future plans for Better Origin as well as whether he considers the Greek market ready for such a thing.
