Betrayal and self-esteem: can betrayal affect self-esteem? It can happen that you have low self-esteem because someone else has betrayed you. In this video we talk about how linking self-esteem to the betrayal you have suffered can be an attempt to defend yourself and shield yourself from the pain. What is self-esteem? And what is betrayal? What does it mean to betray or be betrayed? Self-esteem is the evaluation, the esteem we have of ourselves: how can I evaluate myself badly if the other person betrays me? Rationally we can understand that it doesn't make sense. However, it is a sensation that in reality, we experience. Why does being betrayed make us feel that we have low self-esteem? Because we feel responsible for the other person's behavior. In reality, this is not the case: everyone in relationships expresses themselves and is free to do so; the other person has the freedom to behave as they believe. Their behavior does not depend on us. Linking the behavior of the other, in this case betrayal, to one's own value, to one's self-esteem is a typically childish attitude, whereby we believe that everything depends on us: if the other has betrayed me it means that I am wrong, I am not worthy of being loved, I am stupid, I am guilty. Blaming oneself is a defense mechanism. So, in this sense, betrayal, being betrayed, affects our self-esteem. How can we overcome this? If we dig inside ourselves and go to the deep meaning, we can become aware of the demands we have on ourselves, of the judgment and sense of guilt, which undermine our self-esteem and our value. Betrayal hurts. Let's allow ourselves the pain, without finding guilty parties or justifications to cover up the pain.
