Betelgeuse is no ordinary star. It’s a red supergiant in the constellation Orion, just 650 light-years from our solar system. It’s the second-largest and tenth-brightest star in the sky, outside of our Sun. A few years ago, the supergiant made headlines when its brightness appeared to dim, suggesting a possible supernova explosion. But that wasn’t the only surprise Betelgeuse had in store for astronomers. Measurements from the Alma telescope array revealed that Betelgeuse is spinning at incredible speeds. That means its surface is rotating at 18,000 km/h, or about 5 kilometers per second; that’s ten times faster than the speed of the Earth’s surface. And for a massive supergiant star, that almost breaks the laws of physics. So what’s going on with Betelgeuse? Come with us on this journey of discovery.
