Jews first formed a community in Berlin in 1671, although they had already lived in the city in the 13th century. However, they were expelled and only returned to the small town of Berlin in the 17th century to settle their homes in the suburb of Spandau. Over time, they built synagogues and cemeteries, while the neighborhood continued to grow, especially in the last third of the 19th century, with the population explosion resulting from the industrialization of Berlin. The neighborhood was filled with condominiums with unsanitary courtyards. Today, however, everything has become chic and cool.
