Above the Sea of Galilee there is a place that is still very little known today: Bereniki. The name derives from Berenice, Herod's beloved niece, and it was thought that a large ancient palace stood there. However, when archaeologists went to explore the peak of the mountain on the lake, they found that in Bereniki there was not, in fact, a palace, but the only 8th century church ever discovered in Israel. It is a monastic church, built partly by reusing material from an older church, from the Justinian era (6th century) which collapsed nearby during an earthquake. In the apse, under a marble slab, a relic was found: a mooring stone (?). It is thought that this was, in ancient times, a pilgrimage sanctuary, linked to the memory of Saint Peter the Fisherman or Jesus himself. Today only ruins remain. In this documentary we take you to visit them up close.
