This is the Belo Monte Power Plant, the 4th largest dam in the world and the largest 100% Brazilian dam, since the Itaipu plant is divided between Brazil and Paraguay. Located in the state of Pará, more specifically on the Xingu River, Belo Monte is part of the vast Amazon River basin and has a reservoir of 478 km² and a generating capacity of 11,233 MW. It took 8 years of construction and a colossal investment of 18 billion reais to build this giant of national engineering. However, Belo Monte has been the subject of numerous controversies since the beginning of the project until today, ranging from the gigantic environmental impacts during the construction and conflicts with local communities, to its low utilization of turbines (only 20% in recent years) and fears of even more environmental catastrophes. In this video, we will delve into the details of this monumental project, exploring its achievements, challenges and, most importantly, the controversial issues.
