The Transfagarasan High Road, or Transfagarasan for short (Romanian: Transfăgărășan), is the 2048 meter high national road DN7C in the Southern Carpathians. With a total length of around 150 kilometers, it crosses the Fagaras Mountains in the Transylvanian Alps and thus connects the Alt Valley in Transylvania with the Argish Valley in Great Wallachia. Six peaks in the Fagaras Mountains exceed 2500 meters in height. The Transfagarasă was opened in 1974, after four years of construction. The construction of the steep and winding route claimed several hundred lives. Until the opening of the Transalpina, the Transfagarasă was the highest Romanian national road. Due to its dangerous road layout and mediocre road surface quality, it was the scene of serious traffic accidents from the very beginning. The mountain road is only fully open from July to October, because the almost 900 meter long tunnel at the top of the pass, incidentally the longest and highest tunnel in Romania, is closed during the annual winter closure from November 1 to June 30.
