The wilderness has returned to the Bavarian Forest in southern Germany. Here, in an extraordinary experiment, a "new" primeval forest is being created; over the past 40 years, the forest has been left to itself again. With astonishing success - animals that have long since disappeared, such as the lynx, and plants have returned, and biodiversity is already enormous. Just 2000 years ago, almost the entire continent - from the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden to Sicily - was covered in dense forests. Over the past centuries, most of them had to make way for settlements, roads and cities, or were cleared due to the high demand for wood. Most of the forests that exist in Europe today are man-made forests that no longer have much in common with the continent's original forests. But they still exist, the last green paradises in Europe - original forests that have never been altered by humans. In the five-part series, ARTE goes on a voyage of discovery, immersing viewers in the secrets of Europe's primeval forests with their unique flora and fauna, their myths and their fairytale beauty.
