In the last days of March 1975, the Central Highlands battlefield was very active. After the Liberation Army attacked and captured Buon Ma Thuot, the 23rd Infantry Division of the Republic of Vietnam was defeated, and the forces of the II Corps and the II Military Region of the Republic of Vietnam were ordered to withdraw from the highlands to defend the coastal provinces of the South Central region. However, this withdrawal was unsuccessful, the retreating forces suffered heavy losses and were no longer able to participate in the battle. In order to prevent the Liberation Army's advance from developing into the plains, the 3rd Airborne Brigade of the Republic of Vietnam from Quang Nam was ordered to march to guard the Phuong Hoang Pass on Highway 21 (now Highway 26). This is a winding, zigzag pass along the mountain slopes, one side is a high mountain, the other side is a dangerous abyss, the natural boundary between the two provinces of Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa, located 30km east of Khanh Duong district (now M'drak town - Dak Lak). The 3rd Airborne Brigade is the strategic reserve force of the ARVN Airborne Division, and is considered very good at fighting. This brigade is composed of 3 infantry battalions, an artillery battalion and has other supporting forces. After arriving at Phuong Hoang Pass, the 3rd Airborne Brigade consolidated fortifications, trenches, artillery positions placed in the mountain passes, and camouflaged armored tanks and armored vehicles were ready along the road. The Liberation Army forces attacking on the Khanh Duong front included the 10th Division, the 25th Regiment and affiliated tank and artillery units. On the morning of March 29, 1975, the Liberation Army's artillery launched an attack on the 3rd Airborne Brigade, the sound of artillery explosions shook the mountainous area of Phuong Hoang Pass. After continuous and fierce attacks, the defense line of the Republic of Vietnam was divided, and the number of casualties increased day by day. Therefore, on April 1, 1975, in order to avoid being surrounded and wiped out, the 3rd Airborne Brigade was forced to retreat to Nha Trang, then by road to Phan Rang to establish a new defense line. The battle ended with victory for the Liberation Army, but the troops also suffered great losses with nearly 200 soldiers sacrificed. Today, a memorial has been built right at the site of the fierce battlefield on a high hill next to Highway 26, in Cu M'ta commune, M'drak district to commemorate the Liberation Army soldiers who died on the eve of the country's reunification. -------------------------------------- If you find the video interesting, don't forget to click LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and SHARE. ▶️ Channel address: https://www.youtube.com/c/TungTangKhác... ▶️ For any information, please contact: [email protected].
