In military history, it was the first large-scale airborne operation. Just over 20,000 German soldiers would arrive by air to the island, 8,000 from the 7th Parachute Division reinforced by 14,000 from the 5th Mountain Division. But the Germans were up against an enemy larger than their intelligence service had estimated, and the defenders already knew that the offensive would take place.
