How can you avoid obvious mistakes and blunders in chess games and how do you come up with plans? In this video I show my approach in long games, where I always go through the following program: What threats is the opponent making? I look at every check and every capture move he makes. What capture moves do I have? What checks do I have? Are there any pieces that are uncovered or only once covered by me or my opponent? Tactics are often possible here. Think away from all the pieces: Where are the pawn advances and outposts for my pieces? I ask each piece how it is doing. This way I find out which ones could be improved. I look to see if I can make the opponent's pieces worse or if I can swap strong pieces away from the opponent. Have fun and success in your own games!
