Barrel knocking is an old folk custom that is practiced primarily near the coast of Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania. It is a horse riding competition in which the participants ride at a gallop through a track and hit a barrel decorated with leaves and colorful ribbons with a wooden club, the "barrel club". In 2016, this cultural form was included in the nationwide list of intangible cultural heritage. (http://www.unesco.de/kultur/immaterie...)
