Banská Štiavnica is a beautiful town and its surroundings are full of historical monuments that deserve to be mentioned. In this section, however, we mainly focus on objects that are in the city center. All objects are registered as monuments and are in the list of National Cultural Monuments. The historic city has been a city monument reserve since 1950, and in 1993 the city and the technical monuments around the city were included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. However, something was still missing... roughly 50 years ago, many buildings right in the city center gave the impression that they would sink to the ground before they could be rescued. Who knows where the mistake was, what was missing... effort, taste, mind, hardworking hands that could breathe new life into dilapidated objects, or above all financial resources. Monument-protected buildings rather fell into disrepair as if they were being saved... the framed document of inscription on the World Heritage List was not enough to save them. In recent years, however, the situation has changed a lot, more buildings are getting a new look, a new use, and the city's residents are rightly proud of their renovated city. Access to Banská Štiavnica was and is relatively difficult, and perhaps this was the reason, or advantage, that the city managed to maintain its historical character.
