The term back pain, or dorsalgia, refers to pain localized at the level of the spinal column in the central area between the shoulder blades. We will speak of acute pain if it arises suddenly and lasts a few days, we will speak of chronic dorsal back pain when the pain has been present for at least three months. Although it is easy to understand when you have dorsalgia, it is much more difficult to identify the causes, therefore we speak of a multifactorial etiology. According to recent studies, in fact, 85% of cases of dorsalgia are not attributable to a specific cause and will therefore be called nonspecific dorsalgia; 15% are linked to a specific cause and will be called specific dorsalgia; finally, in 1% of cases, surgery is required. The main causes of dorsalgia are: sedentary lifestyle; incorrect posture; repetitive movements; excessive efforts; to which are added rheumatic diseases, poor diet and biopsychosocial factors. The symptoms and intensity of pain can also be different from one individual to another, generally they concern: muscle pain between the shoulder blades; pain in the movement of the trunk; night and morning pain; intercostal pain. It is often thought that the best intervention is surgery, in reality in most cases conservative therapy, with physiotherapy, is of great help both in the treatment phase and in the stabilization of symptoms. The physiotherapist, after the initial evaluation, will establish a specific and individualized therapeutic program based on the use of physical means, manual therapy, osteopathy and therapeutic exercises, generally divided into three phases.
