Why do babies choke while breastfeeding? Because the baby puts more milk in their mouth than they can swallow, and this excess milk can block the airway. When is it most common? When babies are newborns or just a few months old. Why does this happen? It could be due to the mother's excess milk production. Excessive ejection reflex. Milk comes out too quickly and with force. The baby is immature when it comes to breastfeeding. How can you identify if you have an excessive ejection reflex? Swallowing, coughing or gasping while breastfeeding. Frequently separating from the breast during breastfeeding. Holding the nipple while breastfeeding. Making “clicking” sounds during breastfeeding. Frequent spitting. Having a lot of gas. Refusing to breastfeed periodically. How can you solve the problem when the cause is excess milk? It is common for production to be greater than demand in the first 6 weeks, so things you can do to not stimulate milk production even more are: If the baby stops breastfeeding and soon after wants more, put the baby on the same breast. Do not stimulate the breasts. Be careful with hot water during the bath and do not remove excess with a pump, as this stimulates production even more. Between each feeding, apply cold compresses to the breasts for 30 to 60 minutes. This will decrease milk production. Drain some of the milk before offering the breast. When the problem is excessive ejection reflex? Position your baby so that he or she suckles “above” the mother’s breast, using gravity against the flow of milk. Burp your baby constantly. Breastfeed more frequently. This will reduce the amount of milk produced. Breastfeed when your baby is relaxed, so that he or she suckles more gently and less milk comes out. Wait for the flow to reduce, remove your baby from the breast, wipe the excess with a towel and change your baby. Express a little milk to reduce the flow and then put your baby to breastfeed. When the problem is the baby’s immaturity? Be patient, it will improve over time. Other videos you might like: HYPERLACTATION: A COMPLETE GUIDE • HYPERLACTATION: A COMPLETE GUIDE WITH D...
