Avoids Major Sins Servants of the Most Gracious 5 Halis Bayancuk Hoca (Abu Hanzala) Conscious Servitude The verses we have read show that the servants of the Most Gracious avoid three major sins. These are polytheism, murder, and adultery. In fact, there are many more major sins than this; Allah (swt) emphasized the three most common sins at that time. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) followed a similar method. It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (ra): “I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Which is the greatest sin (in the sight of Allah)?’ He said, ‘Associating an equal/similar to Allah, even though He created you!’ I asked, ‘Which is next?’ He said, ‘Killing your child for fear of sustenance!’ I asked again, ‘Which is next?’ He said, “You commit adultery with your neighbor’s wife.” (Bukhari, 4477; Muslim, 86) Here, an important rule of servitude is taught to the servants of the Most Merciful. If one consciously stays away from polytheism, adultery and murder, this becomes a quality that brings one closer to Allah. We can easily say that the servants of the Most Merciful are people of intention. They do not allow commands and prohibitions to become habits. The consciousness of servitude gives meaning to their actions and words. Whatever they do and avoid, they do it because Allah commands it and they stay away because He (swt) forbids it. When we lose this consciousness, we receive rewards from our deeds based on monotheism and piety, but we do not enjoy it. Deeds that are not enjoyed become tiring. We exert extra effort to do them. When the consciousness of servitude is lost, deeds become dull and the spiritual pleasure we get from them does not encourage us to do more and taste new pleasures of servitude. We need new incentives for each deed. In order not to lose the consciousness of servitude, a person must have an intention. He must examine each deed and ask the question, “Why am I doing this deed? What do I expect from this deed?” The effort to preserve intention is the most valuable of efforts. Because this effort first establishes a connection between the deed and the text that is the source of the deed, and then between the text and faith. This ensures that the faith that shines as the light of Allah in our hearts remains alive, bright and warm. The depth of our servitude is proportional to the depth of the knowledge and wisdom bonds we establish. As we establish a connection between the deed and the text, and between the text and faith, our deeds become a source that nourishes our knowledge and wisdom, and knowledge and wisdom become a source that nourishes our faith.
