In the avalanche winter of 1999, 74 people died on the streets and in buildings in the Alps - 17 of them in Switzerland alone. What is the situation like in these places of disaster 20 years later? How are people doing and what has been done to ensure safety since then? In February 1999, 5 metres of snow fell in the Alps. Whole valleys were cut off from the outside world for days and hundreds of thousands of tourists were stuck in the mountains. Within a few days, thousands of avalanches, some of them very large, reached the valley. In Evolène, in the Lower Valais, a single avalanche claimed 12 lives. In Galtür, Austria, an avalanche penetrated the middle of the village. "We have overcome the dramatic days, but the scars remain," say those affected. For Jean-Louis Combes, nothing is as it once was: "The avalanche took my whole family." Avalanche protection has made great progress since then. The tragedies of Galtür and Evolène would not be possible today - as far as human judgment is concerned. One of those responsible for security said today "I have a clear conscience". The Graubünden filmmaker Gieri Venzin has visited security officers and those affected repeatedly over the last 20 years. The result is an impressive document about life in dealing with the forces of nature.
