Of course, a super important topic - especially now, when before winter we have to think about covering the 'bare' ground with some blanket - mulch. Here are some easy-to-remember facts: What mulches to use in the garden? ???? garden compost ???? composted manure ???? composted bark or wood chips ???? composted leaves or simply left in the beds to decompose naturally ???? perennial or annual green fertilizers ???? plants already growing in the soil, why remove them? wait until spring ???? cardboard or bio-textiles (e.g. from corn, sheep wool, hemp) and straw Why do we mulch in autumn? ???? Using natural mulch in autumn locks heat in the soil, which has a great effect on its health. As the mulch continues to decompose, it releases nutrients into the soil below, which in turn are absorbed by the plants (essentially, mulch feeds the soil, which then feeds the plants). So mulch not only improves the structure of the soil, but also improves its richness. Mulch also introduces microorganisms to the soil and feeds them. ???? A warm blanket is very good for the microorganisms that live in our soil - it protects them and the soil from erosion and cold. Remember that microorganisms are responsible for the health of our soils! We need to take care of them. ???? When the temperature drops in winter, the soil can freeze and thaw repeatedly, which can damage plant roots. Mulch insulates the soil, preventing it from freezing and thawing and protecting the roots from damage. This will keep your plants healthy and strong in spring. ???????????? ????????
