Author: doc. MUDr. Silvie Lacigová, Ph.D. Autonomic neuropathy is a relatively common complication of diabetes. It remains without clinical symptoms for a long time, and therefore is rarely diagnosed and treated. The advanced form threatens the patient with silent myocardial ischemia, severe postural hypotension and sudden death. It significantly increases the mortality of those affected. Autonomic neuropathy can affect all organs with autonomic innervation. We most often encounter symptoms of the disease in the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. The presence of this complication can be indicated by, for example, resting tachycardia, orthostatic hypotension, gastroparesis and erectile dysfunction. There is no causal treatment, we only use treatment of accompanying symptoms. Lifestyle modification (exercise, weight reduction) has a positive effect on suppressing the predominance of the sympathetic nervous system.
