He is a Japanese author and his books and stories have been bestsellers in Japan and internationally and have been translated into 50 languages. Millions of copies of it have been sold abroad. His works have received numerous awards, including the World Fantasy Award, the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, the Franz Kafka Award, and the Jerusalem Award. The most prominent works of Murakami are; Chasing Wild Sheep, Norwegian Forest, Kafka on the Shore and Killing the Commandant (the man who wanted to kill the portrait of nothingness). His stories were later condemned and criticized as un-Japanese by Japanese literature. They believed that his writings were influenced by Raymond Chandler, Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brattigan. His stories are more fateful, surrealistic and have the theme of loneliness and alienation.
